Because waterproof boots dry so slowly—often taking days to fully air out once the interior becomes saturated—they can inadvertently contribute to these conditions if a hiker is unable to dry their feet and socks every night. This brings us to the counter-intuitive logic of the non-waterproof, breathable mesh shoe. For many modern backpackers, especially those covering high mileage, the goal is not to keep the feet dry at all costs, but rather to ensure they dry as quickly as possible once they inevitably get wet. In scenarios involving frequent river crossings, a waterproof boot acts like a bucket; once water tops the collar, it stays there, weighing down the foot and macerating the skin. A mesh shoe, by contrast, allows water to drain out almost instantly. Within thirty minutes of walking in dry air, the mechanical action of the foot and the airflow through the mesh can pump out most of the moisture, returning the shoe to a damp but manageable state. This "plastic bag" effect is why many hikers who switch to mesh shoes report an immediate reduction in foot fatigue and "hot spots." Furthermore, the longevity of the footwear should be considered. Waterproof membranes are fragile. Over hundreds of miles, the constant flexing of the boot, combined with the abrasive action of grit and salt from sweat that migrates into the lining, can cause the membrane to crack or pinhole. Once the membrane is compromised, the boot is no longer waterproof, but it remains just as unbreathable as the day it was bought. Non-waterproof shoes, being simpler in construction, often maintain their performance characteristics (airflow and drainage) until the sole or upper physically wears out. Ultimately, the "best" boot is the one that matches the specific demands of your journey. If you are embarking on a mid-winter trek through the Adirondacks, reach for the waterproof leather boots and perhaps add a pair of gaiters to prevent snow from entering the top. If you are planning a summer thru-hike of the Colorado Trail, where afternoon thunderstorms are frequent but the air is dry and the sun is intense, a breathable trail runner or mesh hiking shoe will likely serve you better. Regardless of your footwear choice, the golden rule of foot care remains: moisture management is a constant process. Even the most advanced "breathable" boot requires the hiker to take proactive steps. This includes changing into dry socks at mid-day, using foot powder to manage perspiration, and taking off shoes and socks during breaks to allow the skin to "breathe" and the UV rays of the sun to kill bacteria. In the end, whether you choose the armored protection of a membrane or the airy freedom of mesh, your feet are your most important piece of equipment. Treat them with the context and intention they deserve, and they will carry you across many miles of happy trails.
