Wildlife officials in Maryland are currently embroiled in an escalating investigation following a disturbing series of three separate beaver attacks on park visitors within a single month, a situation described as exceptionally rare and deeply concerning. The most recent incident, which occurred last week at a popular swimming spot within Seneca Creek State Park, involved a 10-year-old girl who sustained a bite to her upper leg while wading in the water. The attack, which took place around 3:30 p.m. on August 14th, saw the young camper with an organized group when the animal reportedly lunged and inflicted the injury. Fortunately, swift intervention by camp counselors allowed the child to be freed from the beaver’s grip, though the animal managed to escape into the nearby Potomac River.

The injured girl was promptly transported by her family to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda for medical attention. While she was the sole direct victim of the Seneca Creek attack, witnesses, including nearby canoers, reported that the aggressive beaver also appeared to "attempt to charge" one of their vessels. In response to the incident, park authorities immediately initiated a search for the animal and enacted temporary closures of the affected swimming area and a nearby trail, emphasizing public safety as paramount. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the primary agency responsible for wildlife management in the state, has been contacted for comment but had not yet responded by the time of this report.

This alarming encounter at Seneca Creek marks the third such incident involving beavers and humans in Maryland in less than a month, highlighting a troubling trend that has prompted significant concern among state wildlife agencies and the public alike. The two prior attacks transpired at Cunningham Falls State Park, located approximately 36 miles north of Seneca Creek, raising questions about potential localized outbreaks of aggressive behavior in the beaver population.

The initial attack at Cunningham Falls occurred on July 26th, when a 13-year-old swimmer was reportedly bitten. In a concerning development, the animal responsible for this attack was subsequently captured and euthanized by Natural Resource Police. Subsequent laboratory testing confirmed the presence of rabies, a potentially fatal viral disease that affects the central nervous system of warm-blooded animals. This diagnosis immediately elevated the seriousness of the situation, prompting enhanced public health advisories and intensified surveillance efforts.

Just over a week later, on August 5th, a 19-year-old fisherman at the same park suffered a bite to his ankle. He was able to transport himself to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, where he received treatment for both potential rabies exposure and a tetanus shot. Once again, wildlife officials were able to apprehend and euthanize the offending beaver, and, in a deeply unsettling confirmation, laboratory analysis revealed that this animal had also tested positive for rabies.

The escalating number of confirmed rabies cases in beavers at Cunningham Falls State Park has led to the closure of multiple areas within the park. Authorities have reportedly dismantled a beaver dam in the vicinity of the July 26th attack, launched a thorough investigation into the possibility of a broader rabies outbreak within the local beaver population, and implemented a multi-faceted surveillance strategy. This strategy includes "nighttime monitoring" to observe animal behavior and daytime patrols aimed at safely removing any additional beavers exhibiting concerning behavior from the area.

Despite the geographical proximity of the two affected parks, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has stated that they do not currently believe the incidents at Seneca Creek and Cunningham Falls are directly related. This assessment is based on the typical social behaviors of beavers, which are generally solitary or live in small family groups and tend to maintain relatively defined territories. However, the occurrence of three attacks in such a short timeframe, two of which have been definitively linked to rabies, necessitates a comprehensive and vigilant approach to understanding and mitigating the risks.

Understanding Beaver Behavior, Rabies, and Essential Safety Precautions

Beaver attacks on humans are exceptionally rare occurrences, making the recent string of incidents in Maryland all the more noteworthy. For context, according to a 2025 case report published by the Wilderness Medical Society, there were only 40 confirmed cases of rabies in beavers across the entire United States between 2002 and 2021. This data underscores the unusual nature of the current situation. The first two confirmed rabid beaver attacks in Maryland in recent memory have now matched the total number of such incidents reported to state wildlife officials since 2015.

Aaron Hall, Program Director for the nonprofit Beaver Institute, a leading organization dedicated to beaver conservation and research, explains that the typically reclusive nature of beavers plays a significant role in their relatively low risk of rabies transmission. "Unlike predators or scavengers, beavers are not commonly interacting with other species, which reduces their chances of being infected with rabies," Hall stated. "When they do encounter other animals (including humans) their instincts are to run away and avoid confrontation." This inherent behavioral trait of avoidance is a key factor in why encounters, let alone attacks, are so infrequent.

In the United States, the primary carriers of rabies are more commonly identified as bats, raccoons, and skunks. While rabies is a serious threat, it is important to note that it results in fewer than 10 human deaths per year on average nationwide. Despite their generally non-aggressive disposition towards humans, it remains crucial for individuals to be aware of warning signs when encountering beavers in their natural habitat.

One of the most common defensive signals exhibited by a beaver is a loud "tail slap" on the water’s surface. This behavior serves as an alarm, alerting other beavers in the vicinity that a potential threat, whether a predator or an approaching human, is too close for comfort. The tail slap is intended to scare off the perceived intruder.

Experts generally recommend maintaining a safe observation distance of at least 25 yards when viewing a healthy beaver in the wild. However, it is imperative to be vigilant for any signs of abnormal behavior that could indicate illness, such as rabies. Such abnormal behaviors include uncharacteristic daytime activity (beavers are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, meaning active at dawn and dusk), lethargic or uncoordinated movements, aimlessly swimming or wandering far from the safety of water, or actively approaching humans or domestic animals.

"In these cases, the best move is to avoid the animal and alert local authorities," advised Hall. Promptly reporting such sightings to park rangers or wildlife officials allows for timely intervention and assessment of the animal’s health and potential risk to the public.

The physical capabilities of beavers, particularly their powerful incisors, mean that even a non-rabid attack can result in serious injuries. The Wilderness Medical Society report detailed a harrowing encounter in the Connecticut River where a 46-year-old swimmer was "viciously attacked" by a beaver. The animal reportedly bit and clawed the swimmer multiple times, eventually latching onto his left arm with an unyielding grip. The swimmer managed to reach the shore and defend himself with a log, ultimately killing the animal. He later recounted that the beaver was attempting to drag him underwater. Subsequent testing of this beaver’s body confirmed it was rabid.

The current situation in Maryland underscores the importance of public awareness and adherence to wildlife safety guidelines. While beaver attacks remain an anomaly, the confirmed presence of rabies in some of these animals elevates the stakes significantly. Visitors to Maryland state parks are strongly advised to remain aware of their surroundings, maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife, and report any unusual animal behavior to park staff immediately. The ongoing investigation by the DNR aims to thoroughly understand the scope of the issue and implement effective measures to ensure the safety and well-being of both the public and the state’s wildlife populations.
