The timing of this outplanting is particularly critical. Elkhorn coral is widely regarded as one of the most vital reef-building species in the Western Atlantic and Caribbean. Characterized by its thick, antler-like branches, Acropora palmata historically formed dense thickets that provided the primary structural framework for shallow-water reefs. These structures serve as essential habitats for a diverse array of marine life, including commercially important fish species and various invertebrates. Furthermore, elkhorn reefs act as natural breakwaters, dissipating up to 97% of wave energy during storm events and hurricanes, thereby protecting Bahamian coastlines from erosion and flooding.
