Caller ID behemoth Truecaller has officially entered the burgeoning eSIM market, launching its own travel eSIM services designed to offer seamless connectivity to globetrotters. This strategic pivot comes at a crucial juncture for the company, which is actively seeking to bolster its financial standing and diversify its revenue streams in response to a significant downturn in its traditional advertising income. The move signals a proactive approach by Truecaller to leverage its massive user base and explore new avenues for growth in an increasingly competitive digital landscape.

The newly introduced eSIM plans are designed with the modern traveler in mind, offering a flexible range of data packages to suit various needs. These plans will span from a modest 1 GB of data valid for 7 days to a more comprehensive 20 GB bundle valid for 30 days. This tiered approach aims to cater to both short-term visitors and extended stays, providing a cost-effective and convenient alternative to traditional roaming charges. Initially, Truecaller’s eSIM service will be available in a significant roster of 29 countries, strategically chosen to cover popular travel destinations and key international markets.

The initial rollout encompasses a broad geographical spread, including major European destinations such as Italy, Sweden, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Austria, Finland, the Czech Republic, and Denmark. North America is well-represented with the inclusion of the United States and Canada, alongside Oceania with Australia and New Zealand. Further afield, travelers heading to Asia can utilize the service in Indonesia and Malaysia, while popular African destinations like South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria are also part of the initial launch. Other key markets include Switzerland, Norway, and Chile.

Notably absent from this initial list is India, Truecaller’s largest and most established market. This omission is widely attributed to the country’s stringent and complex telecom regulations. India has historically maintained a cautious stance on the proliferation of eSIM services, with concerns over potential misuse and fraudulent activities leading to the blocking of established players like Airalo and Holafly in the past. This regulatory environment likely presents a significant hurdle for Truecaller to navigate before it can introduce its eSIM offering to its substantial Indian user base. The company’s decision to exclude India at this stage underscores the importance of compliance and regulatory understanding in the telecommunications sector, particularly in emerging markets.

To power its new eSIM platform, Truecaller has forged strategic partnerships with key industry players. The company is collaborating with global cellular connectivity provider Telna, a specialist in enabling seamless mobile network access across borders, and Telness Tech, a telecom software provider renowned for its innovative solutions in the mobile space. These partnerships are crucial for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency of Truecaller’s eSIM services, allowing them to offer robust connectivity to their users.

The eSIM market is already populated by several established and emerging providers, including prominent names like Airalo, Holafly, Roamless, and Saily (from NordVPN). However, Truecaller is confident that its existing, vast user base of over 500 million monthly active users will serve as a significant competitive advantage. The company’s COO, Fredrik Kjell, emphasized this point in a statement, highlighting that Truecaller’s starting position is fundamentally different from that of its competitors. "They have had to build their audiences from zero," Kjell noted. "We are offering travel eSIM inside our app that over 500 million people already use and trust every month."

This built-in audience, cultivated over years of service and trust, represents a powerful distribution channel. Kjell elaborated on this advantage, stating, "These are established relationships, with a large number of people having used Truecaller for many years. That changes distribution and pricing." The ability to offer eSIMs directly within the familiar Truecaller application, to users who already rely on the platform for call screening and identity verification, significantly lowers the barrier to adoption and reduces customer acquisition costs. This integrated approach promises a more streamlined and user-friendly experience for travelers seeking to stay connected abroad.

The launch of eSIM services is also a testament to Truecaller’s strategic imperative to enhance the overall utility and stickiness of its application. By adding value-added services, the company aims to deepen user engagement and create a more comprehensive ecosystem. This initiative arrives at a particularly critical period for Truecaller. Just last week, the company announced a significant workforce reduction, slashing 70 jobs across various departments. This move, coupled with disappointing financial results for the first quarter of 2026, underscores the urgent need for the company to find new revenue streams and optimize its operational efficiency.

Truecaller’s net sales for Q1 2026 saw a considerable drop of 27%, reaching 362 million SEK (approximately $39.34 million). The decline in advertising revenue was even more pronounced, falling by 44%. This challenging financial backdrop makes the diversification into services like eSIM not just a strategic move for growth, but a necessity for bolstering the company’s balance sheet and ensuring its long-term sustainability. The company is increasingly leaning on its subscription-based offerings, such as the AI Assistant and Family Protection features, to offset the volatility of ad revenues. Additional services like eSIM are expected to contribute significantly to this revenue diversification strategy, providing much-needed financial stability.

The broader trend of eSIM adoption is on a clear upward trajectory, driven by both increased travel and growing compatibility across a wider range of devices. As reported by TechCrunch last year, the convenience and cost-effectiveness of eSIMs have made them increasingly attractive to consumers. This growing market has also captured the attention of investors, who have been pouring capital into eSIM startups. Within the past twelve months alone, numerous companies in the eSIM space have secured substantial funding rounds. Unicorn status has been achieved by Airalo, which raised $220 million, while Roamless secured $12 million, Kolet $10 million, eSIMo $10 million, and Truley an additional $5.5 million. This investor enthusiasm highlights the significant market potential and perceived growth prospects within the eSIM industry, providing a positive outlook for Truecaller’s new venture.

Truecaller’s entry into the eSIM market, therefore, is a well-timed and strategically astute move. By leveraging its existing massive user base, forging crucial partnerships, and tapping into a growing global demand for convenient and affordable mobile connectivity, the company is positioning itself to navigate its current financial challenges and chart a course for future growth. The success of this venture will depend on its ability to effectively integrate the service into its app, provide a compelling user experience, and navigate the regulatory landscapes of its target markets, particularly as it considers a future expansion into India.
