In a crowded digital landscape saturated with AI-powered travel planning applications, a nascent startup named Boop is poised to disrupt the industry with a novel approach that transforms personal travel experiences into actionable, bookable itineraries. Moving beyond generic, algorithm-generated recommendations, Boop offers users direct access to meticulously crafted travel plans from real individuals who have embarked on authentic journeys. This innovative platform leverages the power of artificial intelligence to swiftly convert a user’s trip into a shareable itinerary, which can then be personalized by others. The core technology analyzes location data and photo metadata, enabling the rapid creation of detailed travel guides. Boop’s vision extends beyond mere itinerary generation; it aims to cultivate a robust network of shared travel experiences that can be monetized, thereby empowering "travel creators" with a new avenue to generate income from their recommendations and expertise.

The brainchild of Nancy Li Smith, a seasoned innovator with a background in AR/VR development at tech giants Meta and Microsoft, and former executive vice president of growth and strategy at the physical AI startup BrightAI, Boop was founded in February. Smith’s inspiration for Boop stemmed from a personal frustration: the lack of an efficient system to recall and disseminate her own travel recommendations. This personal quest for organization evolved into a broader mission to alleviate the significant stress and emotional labor often associated with travel planning. This is a particularly salient point given that women are responsible for approximately 80% of travel decisions, according to Hertelier, and frequently bear the brunt of ensuring every trip is perfect.

"Women are the majority of the time the planner in the relationship and in the family and the friends groups," Smith articulated in a recent interview with TechCrunch. "There’s this pressure to make every trip amazing, not only for yourself or your partner, for your family, for your friends. All these years of the emotional and logistical labor for free. Boop is now solving this so that we can capture this easily without people doing anything." This statement underscores the platform’s commitment to recognizing and compensating the often-unseen work of travel planners.

Boop’s user experience is designed to be a stark contrast to the often overwhelming process of piecing together travel plans from disparate sources. Instead of endlessly scrolling through TikTok for inspiration, sifting through a deluge of online reviews, or meticulously pinning locations across Google Maps, users can tap into a curated library of tested and beloved itineraries created by friends and trusted travel influencers. This shift prioritizes authenticity and social proof over generic algorithmic suggestions.

Boop’s new app turns social recommendations into bookable itineraries

"Boop is the first AI travel companion that’s built on social trust," Smith explained. "What that means is, the moment you start going on a trip and start exploring and roaming around, Boop basically remembers your trip in the background, so all your stops, your photos, your reservations, and in the background turns this into a beautiful, shoppable itinerary that friends can now actually use." This seamless background capture, requiring user permission, transforms the act of traveling itself into content creation. The AI’s role is to intelligently process this data, turning spontaneous explorations into structured guides.

Smith further elaborated on the platform’s core functionality: "And so how that works is, instead of planning from scratch – which is like a weeks-long process – you can now just copy your friends’ real Tokyo or Paris trip itinerary. And in one tap, you can chat with AI and in minutes be able to personalize it to make it your own." This one-tap personalization feature, powered by AI, significantly reduces the time and effort required to adapt a shared itinerary to individual preferences and needs, bridging the gap between inspiration and execution.

The mechanics of Boop’s itinerary generation are sophisticated yet user-friendly. With explicit user permission, the app discreetly tracks movements in the background, analogous to how fitness applications monitor daily activity. This location data is exclusively utilized for the purpose of capturing travel experiences and generating relevant recommendations, with stringent privacy safeguards in place. Boop’s AI is designed to offer context-aware suggestions. For example, if a user has expressed an interest in art and is currently in Paris’s 11th arrondissement, Boop might recommend the immersive art exhibition space, Atelier des Lumières. Future iterations of the platform aim to integrate with users’ calendars, again with their consent, to automatically incorporate existing reservations into their travel itineraries, further streamlining the planning process.

Boop’s utility extends beyond the pre-trip planning phase, proving valuable for spontaneous decision-making while on the go. Imagine finding yourself in the heart of Tokyo at 11 p.m. with a sudden urge for adventure; Boop can offer real-time, personalized recommendations based on your known preferences and the aggregated recommendations of your social network.

Boop officially launched on Tuesday, initially available on mobile devices and operating on an invite-only basis. Prospective users can join a public waitlist to gain early access. The company is actively engaging with select travel creators, individuals whose existing travel content garners significant interest, to offer them early access. Smith noted a substantial influx of interest from creators already sharing their travel adventures, who are keen to monetize their influence. Through a "Boop with me" link, creators can share their curated trips with their followers, embedding affiliate links to facilitate bookings.

"When people copy the link and book, we automatically integrate affiliate commission APIs from the industry, and we generate the industry standard of 10 to 25% commissions, and we turn half of that back to the creators," Smith explained. "With each copy, that means 50 to 100 bucks. And if you’re an influencer with 100,000 followers, and you have 100 people copying this, it becomes a five- [or] six-figure income down the road." This revenue-sharing model directly incentivizes creators to produce high-quality, trustworthy travel content.

To facilitate this monetization, Boop is collaborating with hotel and experience affiliate aggregation companies, leveraging APIs to access booking inventory from major platforms such as Expedia, Booking.com, Marriott, and Viator. This robust integration ensures that users can book seamlessly through the shared itineraries, benefiting both the traveler and the creator.

Boop’s strategic advantage is further amplified by its impressive roster of backers, including prominent figures from the travel industry itself. Stephen Kaufer, co-founder and former CEO of Tripadvisor, and Stephanie Linnartz, former president of Marriott International, are among the notable investors. Their deep understanding of travel and consumer behavior provides invaluable guidance and industry credibility for Boop. In terms of financial backing, Boop successfully raised $3.2 million in pre-seed funding in May, a round co-led by Bling Capital and BBG Ventures, signaling strong investor confidence in the platform’s disruptive potential.

Looking ahead, Boop aspires to become the preeminent destination for travel booking. This ambition is particularly relevant in an era where younger generations, such as Gen Z, are increasingly viewing travel not as a discretionary expense but as a core component of their lifestyle and personal development, as highlighted by CNBC.

"In five years, what we the team internally talked about is when someone wants to plan a trip, they won’t say, check the reviews, they’ll say, copy my Boop," Smith envisioned. "And, so every real trip becomes a guide, and every memory becomes a new currency." This forward-looking statement encapsulates Boop’s ultimate goal: to democratize travel planning, making it more personal, trustworthy, and rewarding, while simultaneously transforming cherished travel memories into a valuable and accessible resource for everyone. The platform represents a significant shift from generic recommendations to personalized, socially validated travel experiences, promising to reshape how we discover, plan, and book our adventures.
