Secondly, the timeless advice to carry a physical map and compass remains paramount. Proficiency in using these analog tools is not merely a nostalgic nod to the past; it is a fundamental safety skill. In the event of electronic device failure, battery depletion, or signal loss, a paper map and compass can be lifelines. Knowing how to orient a map, take a bearing, and triangulate your position is an invaluable safeguard. Moreover, hikers should cultivate a healthy skepticism and trust their instincts.
