She was able to return to the trailhead and received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.

Wyoming Game & Fish Department officials have categorized the event as a "surprise defensive encounter." While the trail was temporarily closed, the bear, believed to be a sow with at least one cub, was not located, and no further management actions are planned for the area. The status of the dogs’ leashes during the incident remains unclear.

"Our thoughts are with the individual who was injured, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery," stated Jackson Regional Wildlife Supervisor Brad Hovinga. "We are grateful she was well-prepared and carried bear spray, which can make all the difference in these unpredictable situations."

While this incident underscores the critical importance of preparedness, particularly carrying bear spray, it also brings to light a potentially surprising and significant factor for dog owners: the presence of a pet dog may actually increase a hiker’s vulnerability to bear attacks.

The Dog Factor: Not a Deterrent, But a Danger Multiplier

"Only 9.2% of incidents reported that the dog warned the owners of the presence of a bear," the study noted.
