The serene image of the Appalachian Trail, a ribbon of wilderness winding through the eastern United States, was once dramatically marred by the unsustainable realities of its own popularity. The Hawk Mountain Shelter, a seemingly innocuous stopover nestled approximately eight miles from the southern terminus at Springer Mountain, had become a stark testament to this burgeoning crisis. Relocated to its current site in 1993, the shelter was designed to accommodate a dozen individuals, a capacity woefully inadequate for the deluge of over a hundred aspiring thru-hikers who would converge on the area daily during the peak "bubble season." This influx of enthusiastic but often inexperienced trekkers led to widespread displacement, with hikers fanning out into the surrounding forest to establish makeshift campsites.

The consequences of this uncontrolled expansion were ecologically devastating. The constant foot traffic to and from improvised fire pits, a nearby creek, and essential cathole sanitation sites relentlessly trampled the delicate understory, stripping away vital vegetation from stream banks. Intense rainfall then met exposed soil, accelerating erosion and transforming once vibrant woodlands into barren expanses. By 2015, the ecological footprint of the Hawk Mountain Shelter had expanded to an alarming four acres, a stark contrast to the pristine wilderness the Appalachian Trail (AT) is meant to represent.

Morgan Sommerville, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s (ATC) director of visitor use management, vividly recalls the jarring transformation. "I’d hiked the trail in the late ’70s and the change was jarring," he stated. "All of a sudden you come to this denuded area in the middle of what are supposed to be pristine woods—and that’s the polar opposite of the intended AT experience." His sentiment underscores a growing concern within the conservation community: the AT’s venerable shelter system, a relic of a bygone era, was no longer equipped to handle the pressures of modern-day outdoor recreation.

In response to this escalating environmental crisis, Sommerville forged a crucial alliance in 2015. He joined forces with the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, the U.S. Forest Service, and renowned recreation ecologist Jeff Marion, a pioneer of the national Leave No Trace campaign and a key figure in developing the ATC’s first official sustainable overnight management guidelines in 2007. Both Sommerville and Marion have been vocal critics of the AT’s traditional shelter system, arguing for a fundamental reevaluation of its purpose and placement.

"They were a necessity 100 years ago when lightweight hiking gear didn’t exist and a canvas tent could weigh 10 pounds," Sommerville explained, referencing the AT’s more than 250 shelters, most of which were erected long before current sustainability best practices were understood or implemented. The common siting of these structures in flat areas close to water sources, while convenient for early hikers, became a significant liability as usage soared, exacerbating the environmental damage observed at Hawk Mountain.

Recognizing the urgent need for a paradigm shift, Sommerville and Marion strategically designated Hawk Mountain as a pilot program. Their vision was to create a replicable model that could inform and inspire trail-wide changes, ultimately revolutionizing camping practices and mitigating the ecological impact of hikers on the AT.

Beginning in 2016, a comprehensive suite of interventions was implemented at Hawk Mountain. Approximately 3.75 acres of damaged woodland were cordoned off with ropes strung between trees, a simple yet surprisingly effective measure that encouraged hikers to respect the boundaries. Laminated cards explaining the purpose of these barriers proved successful in gaining compliance. To combat the "bubble" effect of mass arrivals, an online registration system was introduced, staggering thru-hiker start times and effectively reducing crowd density at the shelter. Furthermore, guidance encouraging the use of bear canisters, coupled with the installation of three bear boxes, discouraged hikers from venturing into the undergrowth in search of food storage, thereby reducing disturbance to wildlife and vegetation.

However, the most innovative aspect of the Hawk Mountain remediation was the creation of thirty designated tent pads. Carved into slopes along a half-mile stretch of trail, these platforms offered a more sustainable alternative to the sprawling, informal campsites that had previously proliferated. "Jeff pointed out that high use doesn’t automatically result in high damage," Sommerville noted, citing the pristine condition of the trail tread both above and below the shelter as evidence that the true culprit was not simply the number of hikers, but rather poor planning and a lack of clear guidance. Marion strongly advocated that providing this guidance was the key to reducing camping-related impacts.

Data from ATC surveys revealed that thru-hikers typically utilize shelters for only one out of every four nights. The vast majority expressed a preference for stealth camping, often at one of the estimated 5,000 unofficial tent sites that had emerged organically over time due to hiker activity. Marion’s strategy was to offer a superior, sanctioned alternative. "When you get to the end of a long day of backpacking, you inevitably start to think about where you’re going to set up camp," Sommerville elaborated. The logic was simple: a clearly defined, well-maintained tent pad, secured by natural logs and situated on a slope, would naturally attract hikers away from damaging fragile flat areas. By strategically positioning these pads near existing amenities like fire pits, the team aimed to both invite and direct hiker gatherings, consolidating impact and minimizing sprawl.

"This approach drastically reduces ecological impacts and thus eyesores along the trail," Sommerville asserted. "It also enhances hiker experiences by making camping easier, more scenic, more comfortable, and more private." The results at Hawk Mountain were nothing short of remarkable. Within four years, hiker impacts had been reduced to approximately a quarter-acre, and the understory had begun a vigorous resurgence.

The COVID-19 pandemic further reinforced the growing preference among trekkers for tent camping, accelerating the ATC’s interest in applying these interventions to other high-use sites across the AT. The Conservancy began prioritizing areas that had suffered from sustained heavy foot traffic. McAfee Knob, a particularly photogenic and iconic vista, draws an estimated 60,000 visitors annually, making it one of the AT’s busiest destinations. Its prominence as a midpoint of the renowned Virginia Triple Crown had led to disproportionate environmental damage at the nearby Catawba Mountain Shelter. In response, the Konnarock Trail Crew undertook significant work to rework and optimize the tread near the structure, installing erosion-resistant stairs leading to its privy and water source, and establishing a dozen dispersed camping pads.

Concurrently, a significant shift occurred in the approach to aging shelters. The ATC and the Forest Service made the difficult decision to remove deteriorating structures, such as the Overmountain Shelter in the Roan Highlands, rather than attempting costly and often ineffective repairs. Other shelters, like the cinderblock lean-to at Cherry Gap, which had sustained severe damage from Hurricane Helene, were dismantled with plans for replacement at more environmentally responsible locations. This transition has not been without its challenges, with some hikers expressing concerns, particularly regarding the loss of historic structures. The decision to remove the iconic but structurally unsound red barn at Overmountain in 2023, for instance, generated considerable opposition. Conversely, the removal of the Cherry Gap shelter, largely criticized for its dark and uninviting interior, was widely viewed by the hiking community as a necessary upgrade.

Despite these occasional controversies, Sommerville remains steadfast in his conviction that these changes are imperative for the long-term preservation of the AT’s landscape. "We don’t envision a future where there are no shelters," he clarified, acknowledging that historically significant structures, such as those built by the Civilian Conservation Corps like the William Brien Memorial Shelter in New York, will likely be preserved. Similarly, sustainably constructed shelters like the Mountain Falls unit in Tennessee will serve as models for future development.

"Shelters are historically linked with the AT experience and they aren’t inherently bad," Sommerville continued. "But most were built with little forethought and we think that there should be fewer of them as we move forward."

To provide a more data-driven approach to future remediation efforts, the ATC commissioned a comprehensive survey of every campsite on the trail earlier this year. Three teams, composed of AT thru-hiker alumni, were assigned distinct zones of approximately 730 miles each. Their mission was to meticulously tally existing campsites, measure the extent of their impact zones, and utilize GIS data to create detailed maps of their findings. This new data will be integrated with a 2025 usage study, which compiled anonymous cell phone data, satellite imagery, and heat maps to estimate real-time visitor numbers on the AT. The synergistic combination of this information will enable the ATC and its management partners to identify areas requiring need-based interventions around shelters and campsites with unprecedented accuracy.

"In the past, we’ve had to rely on first-hand observations to make decisions," Sommerville explained. While this approach was effective for identifying heavily damaged areas, pinpointing emerging problems, especially in more remote sections of the trail, was often a hit-or-miss endeavor. "Now we know exactly where hikers are choosing to camp and in what numbers," he stated, a crucial insight that will empower the ATC and its partners to direct resources towards the most impactful improvements.

"We’re in the midst of a paradigm shift that’s going to redefine elements of the AT experience for the next century," Sommerville concluded. The transformation will undoubtedly be a gradual process, but one trend is undeniably clear: hikers can anticipate encountering an increasing number of thoughtfully designed tent pads and a diminishing number of traditional shelters as they traverse the Appalachian Trail in the years to come.
