In a significant strategic pivot aimed at shoring up its financial standing and expanding its service offerings, caller identification giant Truecaller has officially launched its own eSIM (embedded Subscriber Identity Module) services. This move comes at a critical juncture for the company, which is grappling with a noticeable downturn in its traditional advertising revenue streams. The introduction of travel-focused eSIM plans is designed to tap into a burgeoning market and create a new, recurring revenue stream, thereby strengthening Truecaller’s overall business model.

The newly unveiled eSIM offerings from Truecaller are meticulously crafted to cater to the needs of international travelers, providing flexible data packages that range from a modest 1GB of data valid for 7 days to a more substantial 20GB valid for 30 days. Initially, this innovative service will be rolled out to a significant international footprint, encompassing 29 countries across various continents. The initial launch markets include key travel destinations and major economies such as Italy, Sweden, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Austria, Finland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, Norway, Chile, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria.

Notably absent from this initial list is Truecaller’s largest and most lucrative market: India. This omission is widely attributed to the country’s stringent and complex telecommunications regulations. India has previously taken a firm stance against certain eSIM providers, having blocked services like Airalo and Holafly. These actions were reportedly taken due to concerns surrounding potential fraudulent usage and the adherence to local telecom licensing requirements, highlighting the regulatory hurdles that any new entrant, especially in the eSIM space, must navigate in the Indian market.

To power its new eSIM platform, Truecaller has forged strategic partnerships with established players in the global connectivity ecosystem. The company is collaborating with Telna, a renowned global cellular connectivity provider, and Telness Tech, a specialized telecom software provider. These alliances are crucial for ensuring a robust, scalable, and reliable eSIM infrastructure, capable of supporting the anticipated user demand and the technical complexities of managing international mobile subscriptions.

The competitive landscape for eSIM services is already quite dynamic, with established players like Airalo, Holafly, Roamless, and even VPN providers such as NordVPN (with its Saily app) already offering similar solutions. However, Truecaller possesses a formidable advantage: its existing, vast user base. With over 500 million users who actively engage with the Truecaller app monthly, the company is uniquely positioned to leverage these established relationships for rapid customer acquisition.

Fredrik Kjell, Truecaller’s Chief Operating Officer, articulated this advantage in a conversation with TechCrunch, emphasizing the distinct starting point for their eSIM venture. "The starting point is different from other players in the category," Kjell stated. "They have had to build their audiences from zero. We are offering travel eSIM inside our app that over 500 million people already use and trust every month." He further elaborated on the inherent benefits of this integrated approach: "These are established relationships, with a large number of people having used Truecaller for many years. That changes distribution and pricing." This direct access to a highly engaged and trusting audience significantly reduces the customer acquisition cost and accelerates the adoption rate compared to competitors who must invest heavily in marketing and brand building to reach a comparable audience.

Beyond the immediate revenue potential, Kjell also highlighted the strategic importance of the eSIM service in enhancing the overall utility and user experience of the Truecaller app. By integrating essential travel services directly into the app, Truecaller aims to become an indispensable tool for its users, fostering greater loyalty and engagement. This strategic diversification comes at a particularly opportune, albeit challenging, time for the company.

The launch of eSIM services follows a period of significant internal restructuring and financial recalibrations for Truecaller. Just last week, the company announced a substantial workforce reduction, cutting approximately 70 jobs across various departments. This decision was directly linked to disappointing financial performance in the first quarter of 2026. Truecaller reported a significant 27% drop in net sales, amounting to 362 million SEK (approximately $39.34 million), and a stark 44% decline in advertising revenues. This downturn underscores the urgent need for Truecaller to pivot towards more resilient and diversified revenue streams.

The company has been proactively shifting its focus towards increasing subscription-based revenues. This strategy is exemplified by the introduction and promotion of premium features such as its AI Assistant, which leverages advanced artificial intelligence to manage calls, and its Family Protection service, designed to safeguard family members from scams and unwanted calls. The integration of eSIM services represents a natural extension of this strategy, providing another avenue for recurring revenue that is less susceptible to the volatility of the advertising market. In an era where ad revenues can be unpredictable, ancillary services like eSIMs offer a promising opportunity to generate consistent income and bolster the company’s financial health.

The broader market for eSIM technology is experiencing robust growth, a trend that Truecaller is clearly aiming to capitalize on. As reported by TechCrunch previously, eSIM adoption has been on a steady ascent, fueled by the increasing popularity of international travel and the growing compatibility of modern devices with eSIM technology. This rising tide in eSIM usage has also attracted significant investor interest, leading to substantial funding rounds for numerous startups in the space. In the past year alone, prominent eSIM providers such as Airalo, which achieved unicorn status with a $220 million investment round, along with Roamless ($12 million Series A), Kolet ($10 million Series A), eSIMo ($10 million), and Truley ($5.5 million), have collectively raised tens of millions of dollars, signaling strong market confidence and growth potential. Truecaller’s entry into this market, armed with its massive user base and established brand trust, positions it to potentially capture a significant share of this expanding market, differentiating itself from many of the newer, more narrowly focused eSIM startups. The company’s ability to integrate a service that directly addresses a common pain point for its existing users – seamless and affordable international connectivity – is a key differentiator and a testament to its evolving business strategy.
