In a crowded landscape of artificial intelligence-driven travel planning applications, a new startup, Boop, is poised to disrupt the industry with a novel approach: transforming authentic social recommendations into fully bookable travel itineraries. Moving beyond generic, algorithmically generated travel plans, Boop offers users direct access to meticulously crafted itineraries from real individuals who have experienced real trips. This innovative platform leverages AI to swiftly convert users’ travel experiences into shareable and customizable itineraries, primarily by analyzing location data and metadata from shared photographs. The overarching vision is to cultivate a robust network of shared travel plans, empowering creators to monetize their recommendations and discover a new revenue stream from their travel insights.

The brainchild of Nancy Li Smith, a seasoned innovator with a background in AR/VR at tech giants Meta and Microsoft, and formerly the executive vice president of growth and strategy at the physical AI startup BrightAI, Boop was founded in February. Smith’s inspiration for Boop stemmed from her own frustrations with the lack of an efficient method for remembering and sharing personal travel recommendations. She observed a significant gap in the market for a tool that could seamlessly capture and disseminate the valuable details of her own journeys.

Furthermore, Smith recognized the pervasive stress and emotional labor often associated with travel planning. This resonated particularly deeply given the statistic that women make approximately 80% of travel decisions, often bearing the weight of ensuring every trip is perfect. As Smith articulated in an interview with TechCrunch, "Women are majority of the time the planner in the relationship and in the family and the friends groups. There’s this pressure to make every trip amazing, not only for yourself or your partner, for your family, for your friends. All these years of the emotional and logistical labor for free. Boop is now solving this so that we can capture this easily without people doing anything." Boop aims to alleviate this burden by automating the capture and organization of travel data, transforming free emotional and logistical labor into a valuable, shareable asset.

The current travel planning ecosystem often forces users into a laborious process of sifting through countless TikTok videos, deciphering hundreds of online reviews, and meticulously pinning locations across Google Maps. Boop offers a more streamlined and trustworthy alternative, providing users with direct access to proven and cherished itineraries curated by both fellow creators and their own social networks.

Boop’s revolutionary AI technology acts as a background travel companion. The moment a user embarks on a journey and begins exploring, Boop discreetly records their trip. This includes capturing all stops, photos, and reservations. This captured data is then transformed into a visually appealing and shoppable itinerary. "Boop is the first AI travel companion that’s built on social trust," Smith emphasized. "What that means is, the moment you start going on a trip and start exploring and roaming around, Boop basically remembers your trip in the background, so all your stops, your photos, your reservations, and in the background turns this into a beautiful, shoppable itinerary that friends can now actually use."

The personalization aspect is equally compelling. Instead of investing days in planning a trip from scratch, users can simply "copy" a friend’s or a trusted creator’s real itinerary for destinations like Tokyo or Paris. With a single tap, the AI can then be engaged to swiftly personalize the copied itinerary, adapting it to the user’s specific preferences and needs within minutes. "And so how that works is, instead of planning from scratch – which is like a weeks-long process – you can now just copy your friends’ real Tokyo or Paris trip itinerary. And in one tap, you can chat with AI and in minutes be able to personalize it to make it your own," Smith explained.

The core functionality of Boop relies on user permission to track their movements in the background, akin to how a fitness app monitors steps or running routes. The company assures that the AI exclusively utilizes this location data for trip capture and recommendation generation, refraining from any other applications. For instance, if a user has expressed an interest in art and is currently in Paris’s 11th arrondissement, Boop might suggest a visit to the immersive digital art museum, Atelier des Lumières. This intelligent recommendation engine ensures that the AI’s suggestions are contextually relevant and aligned with user preferences.

Looking ahead, Boop intends to integrate with users’ calendars, with explicit permission, to automatically incorporate existing reservations into their itineraries. This will further enhance the seamlessness of the travel planning and management process.

Boop’s utility extends beyond pre-trip planning; it is designed to be a valuable companion while on the road. For example, if a traveler finds themselves in Tokyo at 11 p.m. with a spontaneous desire for an activity, Boop can provide personalized recommendations based on their established tastes and the collective wisdom of their friends’ travel experiences.

Boop officially launched on mobile on Tuesday and is currently operating on an invite-only basis. Prospective users can join a public waitlist to gain early access. The startup is actively engaging with select travel creators whose existing travel content is already sought after, offering them early access to the platform. This strategic move aims to onboard influencers who are actively sharing their travel experiences and are eager to monetize their content. Creators can distribute their itineraries through a "Boop with me" link, which can incorporate affiliate links, providing a direct path for their followers to book recommended experiences.

"When people copy the link and book, we automatically integrate affiliate commission APIs from the industry, and we generate the industry standard of 10 to 25% commissions, and we turn half of that back to the creators," Smith revealed. "With each copy, that means 50 to 100 bucks. And if you’re an influencer with 100,000 followers, and you have 100 people copying this, it becomes a five- [or] six-figure income down the road." This transparent and lucrative monetization model is a significant draw for travel influencers, offering them a tangible return on their content creation efforts.

Boop is diligently forging partnerships with hotel and experience affiliate aggregation companies. By leveraging APIs, the platform gains access to a vast inventory of affiliate booking options from prominent travel providers such as Expedia, Booking.com, Marriott, and Viator. This extensive integration ensures that users can book a comprehensive range of travel components directly through their personalized itineraries.

The company is fortunate to have garnered support from influential figures within the travel industry, including leaders from Tripadvisor, Marriott, and Expedia. These investors, such as Stephen Kaufer, co-founder and former CEO of Tripadvisor, and Stephanie Linnartz, former president of Marriott International, bring invaluable expertise in travel and consumer behavior to Boop’s advisory board. Their insights are expected to be instrumental in shaping Boop’s strategic direction and market penetration.

Financially, Boop has made a strong start, successfully raising $3.2 million in pre-seed funding in May. The round was co-led by Bling Capital and BBG Ventures, demonstrating significant investor confidence in Boop’s innovative approach and market potential.

Looking toward the future, Boop aspires to become the definitive platform for travel booking. This ambition is particularly relevant as research indicates that Gen Z consumers increasingly view travel not as a discretionary expense but as a priority. "In five years, what we the team internally talked about is when someone wants to plan a trip, they won’t say, check the reviews, they’ll say, copy my Boop," Smith envisioned. "And, so every real trip becomes a guide, and every memory becomes a new currency." This forward-looking statement encapsulates Boop’s ultimate goal: to revolutionize how people plan, experience, and share their travels, transforming personal memories into a universally valuable currency.
